Social Learning Service

Making (and keeping) friends is hard work! It relies on so many different factors—some that we can control, and some that we can’t! Social communication is the way we use language to communicate with others. This is a complex skill that relies on a number of smaller composite skills, which include things like understanding how emotions influence behaviors, the difference between lies and jokes, how non-verbal behaviors impact verbal communication, and so much more. In this course, we break down the social factors that impact our ability to make friends.

Is your child unable or reluctant to share about their day? He’s being teenager, you might reason. Or she’s been at school all day, it’s the last thing she wants to talk about. And you might be right. But there might be something else going on to explain this. We have evidence that suggests that supporting a certain type of memory in children with and without autism leads to improvements in children’s abilities to share about what’s happened to them, their use of mental state vocabulary words like think, know, remember, believe, and their overall well-being. This course provides comprehensive knowledge about how autobiographical memory impacts social learning and what we can do to support it!
